Be Still
Be Still
Soft blues fading into blush, lavender melting into white, it's like watching the surface of calm water change color at dusk. "Be Still" is a monotype, which means this exact moment of light and color can never be recreated.
Brittany Cherkes applies transparent oil-based inks to a plate, then transfers them by hand onto delicate Eastern paper made from natural plant fibers. The paper doesn't just hold the ink, it pulls it in, letting light pass through and glow from within. The result feels less like something painted and more like something that happened naturally, the way fog lifts or tide comes in.
This isn't a reproduction. It's a singular, handmade original. A one-time-only transfer of light and ink, it is impossible to recreate the exact same image twice. Framed, 18" x 15". Shop online or visit Monarch Gallery at 910 Duval Street, Key West.
