Morning Fish
Morning Fish
Morning Fish uses hand-mixed pink, yellow, blue, orange and red tones, and takes us underwater, swimming with fish of unknown species, with the bright morning sun reflecting through the rippling water, illuminating their translucent scales.
There's a hook hanging that the fish ignore, meaning that they have all they need, that Good Fortune is found in simplicity rather than through lavishness, that the sun shines on all of us, and warms us. he painting symbolizes that it's a good idea to let life happen, rather than try to force results.
I used the same folding and creasing technique here, which adds to the texture of the water and light. It's hand-mixed pigments and ink on gessoed canvas.
This is a companion piece to Criss Cross Fish, as they were painted at the same time. You can get an idea of the colors that are under the white surface paint.
With this painting, I gained insight into the array of colors that are possible in water. This piece and Criss Criss FIsh are steps forward in the evolution of the animals, fish and birds that I was seeing, and the environment of water they exist in.
What also began to form for me here is the translucent nature of figures that shimmer and glow ephemerally just out of focus, the way images are sometimes perceived underwater, in the right light.
