Beneath
A circle of water with no surface in it. The top half is the blue you see looking up from twenty feet down, the middle goes almost black where the light quits, and the bottom brightens again into teal and pale green, like sand catching sun through the water. There's a line across the center that reads as a horizon, but it isn't one. It's depth.
Brittany paints water as if she's in it, rather than sitting on the beach next to it, which is why none of her work looks like a postcard. This one is round, 30 inches across, built in layers of pigment and resin on wood, so the surface is glass-deep and holds the room's reflections. It changes as you move and as lighting shifts.
