Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo in 1962 and trained the traditional way first, earning his BFA, MFA, and PhD in Nihonga, classical Japanese painting, at the Tokyo University of the Arts. That formal foundation makes what came next more striking: he took everything Nihonga represented and collided it head-on with anime, manga, and commercial design, building a movement out of a simple, radical idea, collapse the wall between fine art and pop culture entirely.

He called it "Superflat," and it remains one of the defining art movements of the past three decades. His work is instantly recognizable: smiling flowers rendered in candy-bright color, the cartoonish Mr. DOB appearing and reappearing like a signature. In 1996, Murakami founded Kaikai Kiki, an art production company and collective that has since become a launching point for other Japanese contemporary artists working in his orbit.

His collaborations extend well beyond gallery walls, Louis Vuitton, Dom Perignon, Kanye West, and album cover work for artists including Kid Cudi, proof that his reach spans fashion, music, and mainstream culture as fluently as it spans museums.
