Light Reading

A woman on a beach in a striped sun hat, pink sunglasses in one hand and a Key West guidebook in the other, which tells you she isn’t planning to leave. Joshua Roman draws skin in contour lines and lets the color drift, blue at the face, gold through the shoulders, violet by the time it reaches her legs, so she reads as a figure and a map of light at the same time. It’s a classic pinup pose with none of the classic pinup’s apology. The ornate white frame is part of the work, finished in gloss resin until it shines like the sky behind her.
