We'd Rather Not Know, Original

by Thalo Halo

A man in a bow tie and a blindfold, laughing at something he can't see. An orange octopus coming over the top edge with an eye open. Between them, in typewriter font, the title. Behind them, the LIFE masthead, "Oblivious" in yellow script, "Redacted" running up the side, and the two most familiar words in advertising sitting under his chin like a caption.

It's a painting about looking away, made out of the things we look at instead. Thalo paints it like a magazine cover from a decade that never happened, flat teal and sunburst, every element cut and pasted so cleanly it takes a second to notice the tentacle is already behind the man's head. Thirty-six inches square, the biggest of his work on the wall. It belongs in a living room or a study, somewhere people sit long enough to find all of it.
